Join us for Or Hadash’s annual Kristallnacht program featuring My Yiddishe Bubby, a one-woman show of memoir and rescued Yiddish folk song, presented in partnership with the Holocaust Awareness Museum and Education Center.
Written and performed by opera singer Karen Fried, My Yiddishe Bubby blends spoken memoir with lost Yiddish music rescued from the ghettos of World War II. Karen was raised on Rossini and Strauss — until the grandmother who raised her, a Hungarian Holocaust survivor who rarely spoke of the past, told her to stop singing in German. That moment sent Karen searching for the music her grandmother might have known as a girl. What she found were countless stories buried within love songs, lullabies, and prayers — hauntingly beautiful Yiddish music that hasn’t been sung aloud for generations.
